Cannabis has been used as a bedroom enhancer for centuries, and science is now beginning to understand why.
Before the modern age of pharmaceuticals, and the many stimulants they now create, people of all societies relied on more natural means to enhance and supplement their sex lives’. One such tantalising enhancer was, and still is, marijuana. Marijuana has been used for centuries as a sex aid, and has cultural and spiritual significance in doing so – especially where tantric sex is involved.
Well, this is all well and good, but how is cannabis actually going to boost your sex life? Fortunately, we now have science to shed a bit of light on the subject.
HEIGHTENING THE SENSES
Firstly, as many users know, marijuana is a mild hallucinogen that can make your senses feel heightened, leading to everything feeling, looking, and smelling much better. This alone is one reason to try a bit of weed in the bedroom. The heightened pleasure is phenomenal. Perceptions of time can also change, making sex feel longer, and the pleasure deeper.
BRAIN CHEMISTRY
Then there are the actual reactions taking place in the brain. Marijuana reacts with the brain in a very similar way to the chemicals that naturally make us feel aroused and pleasured – replicating the effects of dopamine and anandamide. These in turn lead to increased hormone production, elevated heart rate, and increased blood circulation. If your mind is willing, cannabis can really push your sexual desire in the right direction.
RESEARCHING SEX AND CANNABIS
There hasn’t been much research into how marijuana effects sex within the last 30 years. However, the Canadian Sex Survey has gone some way to illuminate the subject, and shows, in peoples opinion, how marijuana effects them.
Quite interestingly, 40% of men indicated that marijuana use allowed them to perform better and go for longer, whilst 90% of women reported that it made sex feel better, with 40% of these saying it made orgasm feel much more intense.
This however, is not necessarily all the result of chemistry. The relaxation and ease that come with the use of marijuana could be to thank for all of this, in a placebo like effect. Simply feeling more in tune with your partner, and the belief that the marijuana will ease the tension and pressure that often go hand in hand with sex, could be what is actually boosting its enjoyment.
DOSE CAN PLAY A LARGE PART
There are reports of cannabis actually impeding sexual relations – killing libido and making it too hard to function. Generally speaking, it is believed that high doses of cannabis cause this, whilst low doses are to thank for improved sex. This is backed up by research that found THC appeared to boost testosterone levels (a hormone associated with sex drive) in mice by up to 6 times. However, when given in high does, this high level of testosterone plummeted to levels lower than the original base level within 20 minutes. Conversely, when mice were given lower doses, this high level of testosterone was maintained for over an hour. So, if you are planning on getting a bit freaky with the aid of cannabis, make sure you don’t go overboard – more is not better!
Either way, cannabis has the potential to take your sex life to the next level. Whether you are looking for something to add a little bit more spark into a relationship, or simply want to enhance an already excellent sex life, cannabis can have you feeling like never before. As long as your mind is willing, it will enhance every aspect of it – just don’t go too overboard with the dose, or you may find yourself floundering!
